OPENING PROGRAM

Mayor Jerry P. Trenas receives the Plaque of Appreciation  from ISAT U President Dr. Raul F. Muyong.

Iloilo Science and Technology University goes global in the celebration of its 114th Foundation Anniversary on September 9-13, 2019. This year’s theme is “ISAT U @ 114: Building Global Partnership for Inclusive Sustainable Development.”

“We are ASEAN citizens, we are global citizens,” was the call of ISAT U President Dr. Raul F. Muyong during the celebration’s opening program. “In our vision, we aim ISAT U as a leading science and technology university in Southeast Asia by 2030. We can only attain this if we actively involve ourselves in the global economy, global education, and if we participate our activities outside the country,”

Looking back at the person instrumental for ISAT U’s university status, the organizers invited Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Trenas as the guest speaker. Mayor Trenas, then Iloilo City lone district representative, sponsored RA No. 10595, converting Western Visayas College of Science and Technology into Iloilo Science and Technology University.

A sea of blue and gold filled the Multipurpose Educational Center after the celebration was formally opened by Dr. Raul F.Muyong. 

Mayor Trenas gave importance to formal education in the development of an individual. “It gives us the knowledge of the world around that changes into something better; it broadens our perspective about life and helps us build a strong sense of opinion,” Trenas said.

Education, according to Trenas,  plays a role in the development of people and society and it is part of the wheels for inclusive development of Iloilo City. He acknowledged ISAT U as an institution that is committed “to bettering the lives of each students and creating better opportunities and brighter future for everyone.”

The mayor also recognized ISAT U’s contributions in fostering better future through quality education, as a community that ensures holistic learning and development among Ilonggo students and the empowerment to effect positive change in the society. He also mentioned the university’s intervention as training ground and in the development of the Uswag Scholars of the city government.

A resounding applause filled the hall when Mayor Trenas signifies his support to ISAT U. “I am very proud of what this institution has become . . . from an institute to a college, and now to a University…you have my 150 % support.”

Mayor Trenas also included ISAT U in his dream to LEVEL UP ILOILO, “ bilang amay sang Iloilo, when I say Level Up Iloilo kita tanan ululupod agud mag Level Up. LEVEL UP ISAT UNIVERSITY. (as the father of Iloilo, when I say Level Up Iloilo, together we will Level Up. Level Up ISAT University.”

Setting the tone for globalization, the faculty and staff from different campuses wore global attires: the Non-Teaching Personnel-Asian; College of Arts and Sciences-South America; College of Engineering and Architecture-Oceania; College of Education-North America; College of Industrial Technology-Central America; Barotac Nuevo-Eastern Europe; Dumangas- Middle East; Leon-European Union; Miagao-The Carribean; alumni-Africa.

THE SKILLS OLYMPIAD AND THE GAWAD TASI

The Skills Olympiad tested the students’ ability in putting into application the theories they learned in the classroom. Twenty-four skill categories in 11 trades areas were participated by the students from different ISAT U campuses.

“Winners should have gone further,” was the challenged of Dr. Raul F. Muyong. He emphasized that the Skills Olympiad could be a gateway for participation in much higher and bigger skills competition in the country and even abroad. “The University is also preparing for your competencies that could come toe-to-toe with the global standards,” he added.

A strong advocate of TVET courses, the university president also pointed out that lesser number of students are taking programs that would land on  3D (dirty, dangerous and difficult) jobs. He said that “many focused on computer programs. No one is taking civil technology or courses which are considered as dirty and we really lack workforces in this field of specialization.”

Dr. Muyong challenged the professors as well to include in their plans the upgrading of facilities, “Our laboratories should be smart laboratories in the future, I hope that this will be considered by the department heads for next year. “

“Let’s get out of ISAT U. Let’s showcase our talents outside of this University.  Our target is we have to join the national skills competition. We have to join the ASEAN skills competition or if we can make it, the global skills competition,” was the call of Dr. Raul F. Muyong.

GAWAD TASI

The 1st GAWAD TASI was held to recognize and appreciate the partnership and the role of the local media in promoting ISAT U’s activities, programs and services.

“TASI” is the inverted acronym of ISAT. The name started when University was named Iloilo School of Arts and Trades or ISAT in 1939. Since then, even after its conversion to Western Visayas College of Science and Technology and into a university, the institution is popularly known as ISAT. TASI is also the moniker of the statue in front of the administration building.

The different local media outfit recognized were ABS-CBN TV Patrol Panay, GMA-One Western Visayas, Aksyon Radyo, Bombo Radyo, RGMA Super Radyo, RMN, The Daily Guardian, Iloilo Metropolitan Times and Panay News. The government run Radyo Pilipinas, Philippine News Agency and Philippine Information Agency were also given recognition.

Dr. Muyong shared his ideas and ISAT U practices in innovative learning to cope with the demands of the digital era.

Dr. Raul F. Muyong was one of the keynote speakers during the 1st International Conference on Education and Technology (ICETECH) 2019 at Universitas PGRI Madiun, East Java, Indonesia on August 6-9, 2019.

The only Filipino invited as keynote speaker, Dr. Muyong’s discussion aimed to help address the theme: “The Emerging Innovative Learning Across Disciplines in the Digital Era.” The other speakers were Prof. Dr. Joko Nurkanto, Universitas Sebeles Maret Surakarta, Indonesia; Dr. Yazni Abu Bakar, Universiti Kebangsaan, Malaysia and Mohd Mukhiz Abu Bakar, National University of Singapore.

The sub-themes of the conference discussed were: teaching and learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), STEM-based classroom management and Technology, robotics and game for Instructional Purposes, Instructional Technology and application for education, training and professional development for STEM teachers, computer-based learning, innovations in instructional training and education, design and implementation of technology-rich learning environment, augmented reality for education, simulation and game for Educational purpose, and virtual reality for education.

The ICETECH 2019 aims at facilitating researches, academic scientists and educators in an attempt to share their knowledge and experience in the education and technology. Being the only science and technology in the region, the activity is an opportunity for ISAT U to further enhance its program in research and development.

Dr. Muyong also strengthened ISAT U’s linkages and cooperation with other higher learning institutions abroad . He signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Universitas PGRI Madiun, Politeknik Elektronika Negiri Surabaya and Universitas Tidar, all from Indonesia. The partnership covers the exchange of students, exchange of faculty and researchers, exchange of academic information and publications, joint research activities and joint organization of international research conference.

Dr. Raul F. Muyong strengthens partnership with higher learning institutions abroad. The agreements with (l-r) Universitas PGRI Madiun Politeknik Elektronika Negeri Surabaya and Universitas Tidar were sealed during the 1st ICETECH 2019.
