Mr. & Miss WVCST 2012 Winners

Students representing the Hotel and Restaurant Technology (HRT) Department made a clean sweep by winning both the Mr. and Miss WVCST 2012 Titles in a glittering pageant night held on September 6 at the College Multi-Purpose Educational Center.


Franz Joseph Napugan and Sheila Mae Rojo, both fourth year HRT students, bested five (5) other pairs of candidates from the different colleges and campuses of WVCST.

Napugan, romped off with the six (6) of the seven (7) awards namely; Best in Production Number, Best in Formal Attire, Best in Talent, Best in Casual Wear, Best in Playsuit and Mr. Photogenic.

Rojo, bagged the awards for Best in Production Number, Best in Formal Attire, Best in Talent, Best in Casual Wear and Best in Playsuit. Rojo is the reigning Miss Iloilo City 2012 who won the title last August 25 during the 75th Charter Anniversary Celebration of Iloilo City.

Winning Mr. and Miss WVCST 2012 first runners-up were Josef Allen Acedillo and Kathleen May Brillantes, both from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). Second runners-up were Napoleon Von Dimalanta of the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) who also won the Best in Interview Award in the male category and Jocelyn Garrido, College of Education (COE).  Other Miss WVCST candidates were Reynalie Bendol (CEA) who was adjudged Best in Interview; Pamela Panaligan (WCVST-Leon Campus), Miss Photogenic Award; and Krista Gayle Violata (WVCST-Barotac Nuevo Campus). For the Mr. WVCST, other candidates were Raffy Monteclaro (COE); Romeo Andea, Jr. (WVCST-Leon Campus); and Myro John Samonte (WVCST-Barotac Nuevo Campus).

The Search is one of the highlights of the weeklong 107th Foundation Anniversary Celebration of WVCST. Sponsored by the WVCST Student Republic, it aimed to discover campus personalities who will be the college’s ambassadors of good will and who will represent WVCST in the search for Mr. and Miss PASUC VI Regional SCUAA.

WVCST marks 107th Founding Anniversary

Established in 1905, the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST) marked its 107th Foundation Anniversary last September 2-8 with various activities.

Anchored on the theme “Continuing the Legacy of Craftsmanship through Science and Technology,” the foundation anniversary celebration kicked-off with an off-site exhibit at SM-City-Mandurriao on September 2 at 10 a.m. featuring the different products of the college and its campuses.  In the afternoon, a thanksgiving mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr.  Julius Almeria at the WVST Multi-Purpose Hall. This was followed by a motorcade which wound up at SM City-Mandurriao where the Craftsman Fashion Runway 2012 was held at 6 p.m. The fashion show showcased the cocktail dress, gown and Filipiniana collections designed by the WVCST Bachelor of Fashion and Apparel Technology (BFAT) students and Iloilo City designer Hector Gellangarin. The candidates for Mr. and Miss WVCST 2012 were also presented during the fashion show.

On September 3, a foot parade around the campus was held participated in by the students, faculty and staff of the different colleges and campuses of WVCST. This was followed by the opening program with Atty. Julito D. Vitriolo, CESO III, CHED Executive Director, as guest speaker. Other activities of the day included fiesta of invention/robotics showdown where students and faculty displayed their inventions; academic quiz contest in science, mathematics, information technology and general information categories; and a cultural show participated in by students from the different colleges of WVCST-Main campus.

A Skills Olympics was held on September 4 with Atty. Teodoro C. Pascua, TESDA Deputy Director General for Field Operations, as guest speaker. After the program, the students from the different WVCST colleges and campuses competed in the skills trade areas. (click list of winners of the Skills Olympics).

On September 5-6, the Pahampang 2012 (Sportsfest) was held with Dir. Ponciano M. Ligutom, Regional Director, Department of Labor (DOLE)-VI, as guest speaker during its opening program. In his speech, Dir. Ligutom stressed the values that can be learned from sports and what they can do to the lives of students. The College of Industrial Technology (CIT) emerged over-all champion in the Pahampang 2012 with the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) as first runner-up; College of Education (COE), second runner-up; and College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), third runner-up.  In the evening of September 6, the Search for Mr. and Miss WVCST 2012 was conducted with Franz Josef Napugan and Sheila Mae Rojo of the Hotel and Restaurant Technology Department winning the titles.

Activities held on September 7 included Faculty and Employees (FEA) and Alumni Showdown in volleyball, badminton, table tennis and football; fellowship luncheon, lecture forum on the life of Dr. Joaquin Maranon; and the fellowship night and awarding of loyalty awards (system-wide) with Congressman Jerry P. Treñas as guest of honor. Fifty-one faculty and staff received loyalty award for 10, 20 and 30 years of service to WVCST. (click list of loyalty awardees).

On September 7, at 8:30 a.m. at the Covered Court, was the 2012 Alumni Homecoming which started with a business meeting of the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology Alumni Association (WVCSTAA) presided by Atty. Leo S. Sombiro. This was followed by the election of new chapter officers and then the program for the alumni homecoming in the afternoon. Dr. Luis M. Sorolla, Jr., WVCST President, welcomed the alumni and guests. The Jubilarians (Silver, (Class’87); Pearl, (Class ’82); and Coral, (Class ’77) were recognized and feted.  Alumni who excelled in various fields were also recognized and given the 2012 Alma Mater Award. The recipients were: Engr. Norman Z. Samoro (Class ‘81), Business and Engineering; Engr. Arthur Gerardo M. Fajardo (Class “81), Performing Arts and Entertainment; Hector C. Gellangarin (Class ‘87), Fashion and Apparel Industry; Atty. Sulpicio G. Gamosa (Class ’89), Law.  Other awardees were:  Capt. Cesar Ledesma (Class’56), Alma Mater Plaque of Appreciation and Dr. Renato M. Sorolla (Class ’83), Alma Mater Plaque of Recognition.

Dr. Carmelo V. Ambot, Chairman, 107th Foundation Week, officially closed the activity.

The Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST) was established in 1905. Originally called the Iloilo Trade School, it first catered to elementary trade skills.  In 1939, it was converted into Iloilo School of Arts and Trades (ISAT) and finally as WVCST in May 1983 by virtue of Batas Pambansa Blg. 395. WVCST is one of the oldest colleges in Iloilo and Region VI.

WVCST produces 59 new license teachers

A total of fifty-nine (59) graduates from the College of Education are among the country’s newest teachers after passing the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) for both the Secondary and Elementary levels administered last March 11, 2012 and released by the Profession Regulation Commissions (PRC) on April 23, 2012. Of the 59 new license teachers, 35 are graduates of BEED and 24 BSIE and BSED.

The 8 BEED first time takers registered a 100 per cent passing rate while the 27 repeaters who took and passed the said board exam got 87.10 per cent making WVCST garnered 89.74 per cent passing rate in the LET-Elementary Level.

In the LET-Secondary Level, the first time takers got a 76.19 per cent passing rate while the repeaters 17.78 with an overall performance of 36.36 per cent.

WVCST’s first semester enrolment increases by 7.33%

The total population of WVCST for the first semester of SY 2012-2013 increased by 7.33 per cent, compared to last year’s figures. Based on the College Registrar’s report, the first semester yields a total student population of 12,440, or 85 students more than last year’s 11,590.

The 12,440 first semester enrolment, which includes the Graduate Studies and the Laboratory High School, is distributed in the WVCST-Main Campus (7,394), WVCST-Miagao Campus (2,860), WVCST-Leon Campus (916), WVCST-Barotac Nuevo Campus (673), and WVCST-Dumangas Campus (597).

Of the 7,394 total enrolment of the WVCST-Main Campus, the three largest academic units this year, are the College of Industrial Technology (2,186), College of Engineering and Technology (1,937) and College of Education (1,183).

WVCST’s has consistently maintained an increase in its enrolment for the past five years.

WVCST College Professor wins CHMSC Presidency

Dr. Renato M. Sorolla, the first College Professor of Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST) and younger brother of Dr. Luis. M. Sorolla, Jr., the current WVCST President, won the presidency of the Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC), Talisay City, Negros Occidental.

Sorolla, the Coordinator of UNIVOC and former Dean of the College of Industrial Technology (CIT), was elected 6th CHMSC President during the Special Meeting of the CHMSC Board of Trustees presided by Hon. Patricia B. Licuanan, CHED Chairperson and Head of all BOT/BOR of SUCs, on July 3, 2012 at the CHED-Central Office, Diliman, Quezon City.

Dr. Sorolla, who was sworn in by CHED Chairperson Licuanan after the election, succeeded Dr. Benny A. Palma, former CHMSC president, in a formal turn-over ceremonies held on July 9, 2012.
