WVCST-LNCA Holds Groundbreaking Ceremonies

The Western Visayas College of Science and Technology – Leon National College of Agriculture, Leon Campus, held the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Clonal Nursery Complex that will soon rise in the said campus. The event took place last March 26, 2014.

This project is in connection with the National Greening Program of President Aquino’s Administration together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and with the help of the State Colleges and Universities in the country. It aims to protect the environment and likewise to share responsibilities in protecting Mother Earth to State Universities and Colleges in the Philippines.

Dr. Alicia L. Lustica, Regional Technical Director, ERDS, DENR REGION 6, was pleased that WVCST conducted the groundbreaking ceremony for the Clonal Nursery Complex. According to her, despite that Region 6 has the most number of Clonal Nurseries in the country, the College is the first to have the groundbreaking for its building. She only hopes that the construction will be started soon and be finished before the year ends.

Presently the DENR has already put up 22 Clonal Nurseries throughout the country and 27 more nurseries are also existing through the help of the SUCs. In Region 6, based on the report of Dr. Lustica, 3 nurseries were put up by the DENR and 7 by the SUCs. The National Greening Program has a 6 year plan to continuously develop the entire Philippines by planting 1.5 million seedlings to a 1.5 million hectares of land for the reforestation program. Aside from this, they also target to assist in the food security, biological diversity, poverty reduction and climate change.

For this year 2014, WVCST-LNCA is expected to produce 60,000 high quality seedlings that will also be the start of the regreening of Leon. In line with this, Dr. Luis M. Sorolla promised that the college will continuously breed seedlings that will help achieve the goals of DENR and the Philippine government. He assured that the college will be planting high quality seedlings of different fruit trees and come up with a genetic ID or brand. This, he said will surely make Leon popular, as well as energy efficient, environment conscious, would be able to preserve energy and would become disaster free. The building will not only serve as demonstration area but also a training venue for quality planting.

Also present in the ceremony were Mr. Porferio Candado, Executive Assistant to the office of the Municipal Mayor, as well as some DENR personnel.
