The participants’ HD was determined by the use of researcher-made 46-item Hemispheric Brain Dominance Test, and the mathematics performance was based on their average final grades in Math classes. The statistical tools used were the mean, standard deviation, Mann-Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis test. The test in hypothesis was set at .05 alpha level. Results showed that as an entire group, the level of mathematics performance of the participants was “fair” both in Phase I and Phase II and no significant difference existed. The dominant hemisphere among the participants is the left brain both in Phase I and Phase II of the study. When grouped according to program, students enrolled in BS Math, BS Educ major in Math, BS Electronic and Communication Engineering, and BS Mechanical Engineering major in Automotive Engineering showed a left- brain dominance while students enrolled in BS Electrical Engineering tended to be right-hemispheric dominant. This instrument is compose of ten items and 5-likert Psychometric scale that is designed to assess the social skill of the students in their classes or in school. It was developed by Johnson and Johnson and adopted and validated by Go (2004). Data revealed that as an entire group the respondents have very good social skill. Similarly, when the respondents were grouped as to sex, school graduated from College and length of service they have also very good social skill. The respondents have fair problem solving performance as an entire group and as to sex. Those who graduated from public schools, with shorter length of experience also have fair problem solving performance. On the other hand, respondents who graduated from private schools, with longer length of experience have poor mathematics performance. There is a no significant difference in the level of problem solving performance when the respondents were grouped according to sex, school graduated and length of service. There is a weak positive relationship between social skill and problem solving performance, however, it is not significant. This qualitative study takes on a closer look on female homosexuals of the University with regards to their personal, family, and friends dimensions at home, in school and their social environments. It aims to inquire specifically about their coming out as a lesbian, their various experiences and issues with the outside world and their respective outlooks for the future. There were ten (10) female homosexuals who served as participants of the study selected thru nomination or snowball sampling. Data from these participants were gathered thru face to face interview and small focus group discussions. Nvivo qualitative data application software was used in data management, preparation and analysis. Results indicated that most participants discovered their sexual preference at a young age. And while some of them preferred to hide their sexual identities due to fear of discrimination, there are those who are in fact encouraged to come out by their family and friends. Nearly all of the participants also admitted to have suffered bullying from their place and even at school. These harassments come in many forms such as casual and offensive labels, stereotyping, and then there is the social media rants by same-sex relationships at the moment, they are also open to the possibility of having partners of the opposite sex or change of heart when the right time comes. Generally, female homosexuals maintain a positive vibe as regards their future. These results indicate the peculiarities of female homosexuals which could provide distinct and tailored responses from the University and other community stakeholders. Though the use of mother tongue in classroom instruction is on progress, observations and researches provide us ample and significant basis that teachers need upgraded competence in our native tongue, Hiligaynon. World Bank study in 2006 declared that children experience lower levels of learning when their language is not used in school. UNESCO’s recommendations for successful MTBLE stressed that recognition of mother tongue acquisition should be the priority in judging achievement; recruitment of teachers who have cognitive proficiency in the first language; provision to pre-service and in- service teacher education and promote policies that position parents as “first teachers”. In the Philippines, Mother Tongue Based-Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) policy considered the implementation of local mother tongues as the language of instruction in Kindergarten to year three (K -3), with the official languages (Filipino and English) being introduced as the language of instruction after grade three. While a very small number of schools previously implemented MTB-MLE, many schools and teachers are now learning how to use a local mother tongue as the language of instruction where, as observed some are not yet proficient in native language such that of Hiligaynon . Safary Wa-Mbaleka (2014) in his study stressed that the instruction of English in the Philippines causes some challenges to scholars due to its rich linguistic diversity. In this, the Philippine Government launched a new educational policy that promotes learning in mother tongues in earlier years of primary education. While this policy is based on sound research, it poses some challenges to linguists due to the various linguistic backgrounds found in almost every classroom in the around the nation. With all the information presented, the researchers believe that steps can be taken in the early years and during the transition to school to prepare children for the mix of language(s) that will be used in primary school. These are vital to the success of a mother tongue-based program. (http://www.globalpartnership.org/blog/children-learn-better-their-mother-tongue). It is in this premise that the researcher would like to ascertain whether the research knowledge, research competence and institutional support can affect the research productivity of the faculty members of the satellite campuses of the ISAT U System. Descriptive-quantitative-correlational research design was employed. The data gathering instrument is the questionnaire adapted from Mendoza (2008) and from the instrument of AACUP used in Accreditation. One-hundred fifty-six (156) faculty members of the ISAT U satellite campuses were the respondents. Twenty-five (25) were from ISAT U Barotac Nuevo Campus, twenty-five (25) were from ISAT U Dumangas Campus, eighty-two (82) were from ISAT U Miag-ao Campus, and twenty-four (24) were from ISAT U Leon Campus. Mode, mean and regression were the statistical tools used. Findings revealed that the faculty members had low research productivity, average research knowledge and maintained a practitioner level of research competence. They perceived the institutional support for research related activities as moderate. Significantly revealed by the findings is that for a faculty to be research productive, he should possess research knowledge, competence and institutional support. Taken individually, only research competence is the predictor of research productivity. It is recommended that a developmental plan for the enhancement of research productivity of the satellite campuses should be strictly implemented. }, keywords = {2017, institutional support, research competence, research knowledge, researchproductivity}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {book} } ISAT U satellite campuses, particularly the Barotac Nuevo Campus, struggle to be at par with the leading universities in the Philippines especially in research productivity but the manifestations of research development can hardly be seen. The level of acceptability as to appearance, taste, texture, aroma and general acceptability was also evaluated. The sensory characteristics were evaluated by selected panel of evaluators using a sensory evaluation score sheet based on the Six - Point Hedonic Scale. Frequency count and percentage were used as statistical tools to determine the sensory characteristics of sweet potato cupcakes. On the other hand, Arithmetic mean was used to determine the level of acceptability of sweet potato cupcakes and One-Way Analysis of Variance was used to determine if there were significant differences in the appearance, taste, texture, aroma and general acceptability of sweet potato cupcakes enriched with turmeric powder. The hypothesis was tested at 0.01 level of significance. Findings revealed that the outside characteristics of sweet potato cupcakes enriched with 5 grams turmeric powder has a moderately rounded top, yellow-orange in color, moderately light in weight in proportion to size and has a moderately shiny surface while the inside characteristics were yellow-orange in color, has a moderately uniform, thin-walled cells with no larger air spaces, moderately moist, moderately tender, moderately distinct sweet potato taste and has a very distinct sweet potato aroma. On the other hand, sweet potato cupcakes enriched with 10 grams and 15 grams turmeric powder had a perfectly rounded top, yellow-orange in color, moderately light in weight in proportion to size and have a moderately shiny surface while the inside characteristics were yellow in color, moderately uniform, thin-walled cells with no larger air spaces, moderately moist, moderately tender, moderately distinct sweet potato taste and have a moderately distinct sweet potato aroma. This study aimed to examine preservice teacher cognition on student responses. Specifically, it determines how preservice teachers scrutinize and evaluate whether students' responses are mathematically correct or another alternative conception. A researcher-made questionnaire subjected to validity and reliability was utilized to gather initial data as a basis for an interview. Discussion sessions were arranged so that chosen respondents can give clarification or verification of their answers through explanations or illustrations. A significant number of preservice teachers view student’s analytical procedures to be correct where in fact they are not. To determine the problem solving skills and physics performance of the students, the Teacher-Made Problem Solving Test and rubrics developed by Muñoz (2014) were used in this study. The respondents were the thirty (30) third year Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, taking Physics 3 at Iloilo Science and Technology University, Iloilo City during the first semester of SY 2015-2016. Frequency distribution, means and standard deviation were used in determining the level of problem solving skills and problem solving performance of the students. The Pearson-product moment correlation was used to investigate the existence and the significance between variables. Results of the study revealed that both the problem solving skills and physics performance of BS Math students belonged to the category beginning. The results suggest that they have not developed adequately the fundamental knowledge and skills and core understanding of doing authentic performance task. Problem solving skills namely; identifying cases, describing cases, matching cases with principle, and mathematical procedures or algorithm are significantly related to the performance of students in physics. Further, it appears that matching cases and mathematical procedures are problem solving skills which both predicts physics performance. Introduction 21st century learning envisioned to develop scientifically, technologically and environmentally literate and productive members of society who are critical problem solvers, responsible stewards of nature, innovative and creative citizens, informed decision makers and effective communicators. Ocampo (2015) stressed out that teachers are developing lifelong learners with critical thinking and technical skills so they can find and create meaningful opportunities wherever they are. Individuals are spending energy and most of their time on problem solving and decision making because of complicating social structure, technological developments, political, social and economic problems. She believed that developing problems solvers who can make decisions that would lead to rationalize choice on issues confronting them should gain essential skills of communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creating. According to Anderson, problem solving is closely related to psychological harmony, communication skills, critical thinking and decision making of the individual. The purpose of training programs should be to teach the students to solve possible problems both on their field and real life. Feynman, the Nobel laureate in physics, expresses that problem solving ability would be one of the main tests of knowledge of physics, and advise trying to solve as many problem as possible. According to Heller and Reif (1984), problem solving is an intellectually demanding activity of central importance in any science. All the sciences, both pure and applied, are centrally concerned with developing and systematizing knowledge useful for solving various kinds of problems. Problem solving is a complex, multi-layered skill, and not one that most students can be expected to develop unaided. Hence, education in the sciences must address the crucially important task of teaching students to become more proficient problem-solvers. Problem based learning plays an effective role to develop problem solving skills of students both individual and in groups. Teacher is the main source to help the students to improve their problem solving skills. This situation provides the students with opportunities of problem solving, and helps them to be good problem solvers making them solve on issues confronting them. This study was conducted to find if there is a significant relationship between problem solving skills and performance in physics so that, if there is a relationship, activities and interventions can be conducted. Strategies could be devised incorporating problem solving skills that could enhance students’ skills in finding a solution to a problem situation encountered, thus, increase performance in physics. }, keywords = {2016, Physics Performance, Problem Solving, Problem Solving Skills}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {book} } This descriptive correlation study aimed to determine the problem solving skills and performance in physics of the students and the relationship between them. This clam is commercially important because it is harvested for human consumption. Recently, it was observed that fewer mud clams have been harvested due to overexploitation. To maintain viable stocks, successful culture of this mud clam in the laboratory is important. Thus, this study aimed to determine the effect of using mud substrate in the rearing of A. edentula to its follicle size and egg number. Spent clams were divided into two groups. One group was placed in 50-l aquaria/white basins containing mud from the collection site and the other group was placed in 50-l aquaria/white basins with no substrate. Every week, all clams were weighed, and three clams for each group were sacrificed for histology. Histological evaluation of follicle size, oocyte number and oocyte-size frequency distribution was done every week. Follicles size and oocyte number of gonads that represent each week were compared using analysis of variance. Histological examination revealed that egg number per follicle and follicle size increased from week 0 to week 4 in clams reared with and without mud substrate. Follicle size and egg- number are generally higher in clams reared with mud substrate than to those reared without mud substrate. Thus, it is recommended that for aquaculture purposes, clams should be reared with mud substrate for faster increase in follicle size and egg number thus leading to faster rematuration.}, keywords = {2016}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {book} } Anodontia edentula also known as imbao is a mud clam that lives in the sandy- muddy substratum near mangrove areas. The survey was done by transect mapping of the biophysical condition, by observation and by documentation of some economic activities of the local people including the siltation of Sibalom-Leon river beds. Results indicate that there is really an economic activity related to biochar production from harvesting of top stems and branches of different premium and indigenous species of forests and agroforests trees including leguminous trees. Local people harvested those trees in allowable and sustainable manner. There are no total pullout of the trees but instead it is just top cutting and branch pruning, thereby allowing the trees to regenerate in 4 to 5 months. In Iloilo, Philippines, Chameleon Association is one humanitarian organization. Chameleon Association, Incorporated is a non-stock, non-profit, non-government humanitarian organization providing protection and rehabilitation to young Filipino girls who have suffered physical and sexual abuse. It was founded in 1997 by French Laurence Ligier and Ellien Regondon who initiated to provide safe and wholesome environment for girls 5 to 18 years old in order to heal and strengthen them from traumatic experience. It is the vision of Chameleon to have a society where families and communities are self-reliant, child-friendly and free from all forms of abuses and violence. It is its mission to stand and act as model institution that promotes the empowerment and development of children and their families through education, advocacy and other psychosocial interventions (www.cameleon-association.org, 2014). Chameleon association is now 17 years in the Philippines. Since its creation in 1997, the association had already protected more than 600 children through its integrated approach and multiple programs. Chameleon implements programs for health, the defense of children’s rights, and income generating projects. It likewise extends its services to the beneficiaries’ families and to underprivileged children in the communities through sponsorship, advocacy and networking. Chameleon gives back to these children part of their innocence and helps them to fulfill their dreams of going to school and having a future (www.slideshare.net, Retrieved: May 25, 2014). It is the aim of Chameleon to facilitate the rehabilitation and reintegration of abused girls to their families and enhance their capacity and capability to ensure their survival, protection, and integral family development. This is the reason why the family members are involved in programs and trainings of the association. The beneficiaries of the association are girls from Region VI, between 5 to 17, and those victims of sexual abuse. Sponsorship in the Chameleon program includes school supplies and payment of miscellaneous and tuition fees of children and as needed, health, psychological and legal expenses. Each girl in the rehabilitation program is supported by 2-3 sponsors. Children from the communities are supported by 1 sponsor, usually from outside of the country. The association creates long lasting relationships between these children and their sponsors through the exchange of letters, drawings, photographs, report cards, and small gifts. In the sponsorship program, it is the objective of Chameleon to help the poor but deserving children and their families so they can become self reliant and responsible individuals through individual sponsor, practical skills training and health care and medication. It is with this objective via practical skills training that WVCST and other schools and technical training centers are involved. WVCST is a state college that provides skills training to the people of Western Visayas and the country in general since 1905. It offers 4-year courses and short-term programs in vocational, practical arts and technical areas. Humanitarian programs have put a great deal of effort into improving the design and management of humanitarian responses in conflict situations. Humanitarian agencies have agreed on international standards, numerous technical guidelines have been produced, training programs are offered on different aspects of humanitarian programming, and aid programs are evaluated some systematically. It is in this context that this impact evaluation comes in. It is the objective of Chameleon to improve its delivery of services through feedbacks from its beneficiaries, hence, this study was conceptualized. Despite the technical progress in the last decade, knowledge of the impact of humanitarian interventions in alleviating suffering of victims and for them to cope with the past situation remains limited. Mosquera, Rosario G Physical Education Activity and Motor Development: Its Impact on Student’s Academic Achievement Book 2016. Abstract | BibTeX | Tags: 2016 @book{2016-7, title = {Physical Education Activity and Motor Development: Its Impact on Student’s Academic Achievement}, author = {Rosario G. Mosquera}, year = {2016}, date = {2016-01-05}, abstract = {he Role of physical education in the school curriculum is to help students develop the competencies and beliefs necessary for incorporating regular physical activity into their lives. Through involvement in a well-taught physical education program, students can achieve physical and academic benefits. According to Mac Donncha (2005), physical education is educational experience where the focus is on the body, physical activity and physical development. However, physical Education has many goals one that has been consistently reinforced over the last decade is its promotion of lifelong activities for the benefit of public health. Physical Education curriculum is based on a holistic concept of physical activity, one that “recognizes the physical, mental, emotional and social dimensions of human movement, and emphasizes the contribution of physical activity to the promotion of individual and group well-being” (Department of Education and Science, 2003). Hulme, Poor, Schulein, & Pezzino, (1983) cited that the evidence of children with physical disabilities become more interested in activities when they are given means to participate actively, and when they achieve some control over their environment. Therefore, whether a student has moderate motor skill deficits or severe and multiple physical disabilities, it is essential that teachers and therapists provide frequent opportunities for him or her to learn and practice functional motor skills through meaningful activities in normal environments. Parents identify the routines where teaching the child functional motor skills would be most beneficial, and when family members have time to teach. Keeping a log of 2 or 3 days’ activities is an effective way for a family to identify their priorities and time constrains (Rainforth & Salisbury, 1988). Furthermore, motor development does not always follow even the general patterns described above. (Horowitz & Sharby, 1988; Loria, 1980). Loria (1980) found that children simultaneously worked on proximal and distal, weight bearing and non-weight bearing, and gross and fine motor development in the arm and hand. She also found that children achieved the corresponding motor skills in varying sequences. Singer (1981) defined performance test as the type of mental test in which the subject is asked to do something rather than to say something. Performance test is the type of test which throws light on the ability to deal with things rather than symbol (Denver, 1981). Achievement is defined as measurable behaviour in a standardized series of tests (Simpson and Weiner, 1989). Achievement is usually constructed and standardized to measure proficiency in school subjects. According to Bruce and Neville (1979) educational achievement is measured by standardized achievement test developed for school subjects. Allen, Epps, and Haniff (1991) posted that some undergraduate males with these qualities did not achieve high grade point average in college. Simpson and Weiner (1989) contended that achievement tests intends to measure systematic education and training in school occupation towards a conventionally accepted pattern of skills or knowledge. Richard (200) and Tony (2000) used the three terms academic performance, achievement and outcomes interchangeably in their studies. However, Mark and Ainley (1999) were careful in the use of the terms. They distinguished that academic performance, achievement and outcome were clearly differentiated. They observed that achieving well in school had significant influence on employment and leaning outcome for young people many years after leaving school. What this suggest is the academic achievement improves or brings about outcome. Lawrence (1989) distinguished achievement from performance when he stated that academic is long-term (“end”) while academic performance is measurable at any point in time (continual). In other words, achievement can be measured as stagnating, failing or improving over a long period. Lawrence (1989) further classifies activities that occur in performance as academic performance index. For instance, students’ performance based on reading selection of one or more schools within each district, among others. Stevenson, Shin-Yin and James (2001) discussed the academic achievement in mathematics’ measured performance in perceptual speed, coding skill, spatial abilities vocabulary, verbal memory and general information discovered that performance by the student. Wainer (1994) elucidated further that the performance of more than 645 000 children in 4, 000 public schools derived their education achievement through their performance scores over a long period of time. Learning outcome can be measured by academic achievement and accountability (Steve, 2000). According to Mueller (1992) it is easy to identify by phrases that go along with it namely, performance outcome, leaning, outcome, exit behaviour and whole-child development, authentic assessment, learner outcome certificate of mastery, holistic education, critical thinking and lifelong learning. Three kinds of government examinations were taken by the graduates, namely: CSC Examination, PRC and TESDA assessment. With regards to the graduates’ employment profile, majority of them are now working on a regular or permanent status and are earning P9,000 and below per month. The graduates’ waiting time mostly ranged from one to six months after graduation. The skills acquired in their course which they found relevant in their present jobs were: skills in computer ranked first, followed by knowledge in accounting and bookkeeping. Similarly, skills in mathematics, statistics, analytical with programming and problem analysis skills are also found relevant and useful by the BSM graduates. Majority of the graduates found their job as walk-in applicant. A number of graduates wished to pursue their graduate studies in courses like Diploma in Teaching, M.A. Math, Computer Science, Engineering, Psychology and Law. The graduates recommended additional accounting, bookkeeping, computer programming and troubleshooting subjects, more references in higher math subjects be available in the library, strong linkages to industry, thesis subject to be given in two semesters and periodic curriculum review to improve BSMath Curriculum. Multiple Intelligence and Mathematics Performance of the BS Mathematics Students of western Visayas College of Science and Technology This descriptive research study aimed to determine the multiple intelligence and mathematics performance of the BS Mathematics students of Western Visayas College of Science and Technology. The participants were 90 BS Mathematics students during the second semester of school year 2014-2015. The data gathering instrument was the Multiple intelligence Questionnaire adopted from Walter Mackenzei. Mathematics performance was based from the participants final grade in mathematics during the second semester school year 2014-2015.The statistical tools used were frequency count, percentage mean, One-way Anova, pearson Chi-Square set at .05 level of significance. The findings revealed that most of the participant had “logical” intelligence when taken as a whole and when grouped according to year level. As an entire group, the level of mathematics performance of the participants was “ moderate”. There was a significant difference in the mathematics performance of the participants when grouped according to year level and multiple intelligence. It was concluded that multiple intelligence was related to the mathematics performance of the participants. It is recommended that teachers should provide different classroom activities that will suit the multiple intelligence of the students . Further research should be conducted along this line to validate the result of this study.}, keywords = {2016, mathematics performance, multiple intelligence, year level}, pubstate = {published}, tppubtype = {book} } The aim of this study was to trace graduates of the BS in Mathematics (minor in Computer Science) from the year 2006 to 2013.
