ISATU Educators Enhance Expertise in Cultural Mapping Through ISAT U GAD, SUCAHTEP Training

Faculty members of Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) embarked on a journey to develop their cultural mapping skills, taking the lead in a significant initiative spearheaded by the State Universities and Colleges Association of Hospitality and Tourism Educators of the Philippines Inc. (SUCAHTEP, Inc.) in partnership with the ISAT U Gender and Development Center.

The endeavor was realized through a Capability Building Training Workshop with the theme “Discovering Diversity Across Time, Place, and Culture Through Cultural Mapping” facilitated by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts SubCommission on Cultural Heritage on October 22 to 26, 2023, at the TLE Center, Iloilo Science and Technology University.

The collaboration was made possible through the partnership highlighting the institution’s commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of cultural heritage and diversity.

The five-day training equipped the mappers with modules developed by the NCCA which included a two-day fieldwork component in the Municipalities of Leon and Alimodian, wherein educators and professionals from multiple higher education institutions across the region actively engaged in the mapping of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. This hands-on experience allowed participants to gain practical insights into the complexities and nuances of cultural preservation.

The activity drew educators and professionals from multiple higher education institutions across the region that included the following:

  • Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) – Iloilo City and Dumangas campus
  • Capiz State University
  • University of San Agustin
  • STI West Negros
  • Central Philippines State University- Kabankalan, Negros Occidental
  • Northern Iloilo State University- Estancia,Iloilo
  • West Visayas State University- Pototan Campus
  • Carlos Hilado Memorial State University

Cultural mapping is a vital practice that involves documenting and preserving the cultural heritage and identity of a community or region. It provides a comprehensive view of traditions, practices, and significant historical sites.

The training’s significance extended to its emphasis on the integration of cultural diversity, gender sensitivity, and the role of cultural aspects in sustainable development into higher education program content.

This collaboration showcases the potential for higher education institutions to play a pivotal role in cultural conservation, gender sensitivity, and sustainable growth within their communities.

ISAT U’s commitment to advancing these crucial endeavors exemplifies its dedication to fostering an environment of cultural appreciation, gender equity, and sustainable development.

As the educators and professionals return to their respective institutions, they bring with them a wealth of knowledge and practical skills that can contribute to the preservation and growth of cultural heritage across the Philippines.

This collective effort promises a brighter future for cultural preservation and sustainability.
